Re: 1993 940 Cylinder head has some plugged holes?

Quite normal. That head could be used for different engines and need the closed holes open and the open holes closed. Depending on its use depends which holes are drilled out. the rest of the caked up carbon I already scraped and chiseled away in other areas of the head. I do hope you didn't use a c...

Where exactly is the oil coming from? On my 960 I had a similar problem but before I started throwing money at it I did a very thorough examination and found that the head gasket was leaking oil out of the engine. No trace of oil in the coolant. The oil only came out on hard acceleration, especially...

Re: 1993 940 Head Gasket bolts, reusable or no?

The head bolts can be re-used up to 5 times if they are not stretched. One very important point with Volvo heads is to check them for height and warpage whenever they are removed. This is best done by a machine shop with the correct tools. The head height must be at least 5.752" (146.1mm). If it is ...

The idle on the 740 with the Jetronic LH 2.4 is not adjustable. It is computer controlled. Re: 740 GLE ECM numbers that cross ref. with Bosch

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.

The Bosch part number for the '90 740 without EGR is 0 280 000-561. Known substitutes are 0 280 000-933, 0 280 000-935 and 0 280 000-951.

The 561 is for cars equipped with a cold start valve. The 933 and 951 eliminated the cold start valve circuit.

Many of the 240 parts are interchangeable over different years. Body panels are a good example although not as flexible as the seats.

Before you took it apart the timing was set. If the crankshaft pulley has deteriorated the mark on the pulley may no longer be in the correct place.

Re: Tail lights and Brake light issues

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site. How many tail lights weren't working? The only relay associated with the rear lights is the bulb failure warning. The K-jet control unit will not work with the LH.

As for the injector wires I would run them alongside the existing loom, tape them into place then cover the whole thing with a braided flex sleeve which you can buy at car parts shops or even eBay.

The part numbers for the 960 and 940 sunroofs are different so I would assume that there is something different about their construction.

You haven't said what year your 940 is. A compatible sunroof was fitted to the 740 from 1988 to 1992 but this was only used on the 940 to 1993.

On the 940 it depends on the fuel system installed.

If you have the Regina system there is a thermo contact in that hole. If you have the LH 2.4 system there should be a plug, part number 1274052, obtainable from our sponsors at the top of the forum.

New or replacement seats or control modules must be calibrated by moving them to their limit positions. This is done using the On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) unit in the engine compartment.

The attached from VADIS gives you the information you need to do this:

One of the main causes of failure on this type of speedo is at the sensor connector which becomes oxidized. There may also be a metal wire seal on the connector which has been known to cut through the connector and into the wiring.

The MAF is not adjustable. Have you checked to see if fuel is reaching the engine? Crank it a few times and pull a spark plug to see if it is wet. If there is no fuel on the plug check fuses 1 and 11, main and tank pump fuses. If they are OK check the fuel system relay by putting your finger on top ...

The 940 doors definitely do not fit. In the US the 940 was phased out in 1995. The 960 body had some modifications in the same year and one of the changes was the doors. In the UK we kept the 940 until 1998 but they did not receive the same modifications as the 960.

Ignition coils do fail but are easy to check. Using an ohmmeter, check the resistance between the side terminals of the coil. Do this with all of the wires to the coil disconnected. To which light are you referring - "Check Engine" or "Service"? The Check Engine light would indicate that fault codes have been set and probably would not go out after the car warms up. Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.

I'll answer the easy one first: the thing next to the fuel pump is the filter.

Volvo 740s with the Regina fuel system do use only an in-tank pump and the series 1 Volvos used them. Without knowing pressure specs I wouldn't be prepared to commit myself.

The sensor is mounted in the top of the bell housing, down behind the engine. It is not unusual for the wiring to chafe and break the insulation causing problems.

Between 1 and 3mm is ideal. Carefully check the front surface of the crankshaft where the old seal was sitting. You will probably find that grit has worn small grooves in the surface. The new seal needs to be seated just behind the grooves thus making contact with a smooth surface.

Re: S90, 1998, Flashing Blue AC Light

The attached might help your mechanic to find it. In the inset picture it is marked with a red X.

Re: Engine removal 1989 240DL

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.

The attached has the engine and transmission removed together which is the recommended procedure for the manual transmission cars. As for the numbers and sizes of bolts I have no reference for these.

Re: S90, 1998, Flashing Blue AC Light

You are turning off the AC. After depressing the Recirc button depress and release the AC button within 5 seconds. Self diagnostics should now start.

Re: 740GL Rough Idle Stalling

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.

Have you erased the codes since your friend worked on it?

3-2-1 is the cold start valve and 2-2-1 is Lambda operation, otherwise known as O2 sensor. This could have been thrown up by the MAP sensor or hoses off.

Re: 89 740 crank sprocket key

I am assuming you had the CEL before you did the timing belt. Did you erase it? I have found that only disconnecting the battery doesn't always erase the codes. My first job would be to check the OBD and erase any codes found. Then run the car and see if they return. If you had everything set up cor...

Re: S90, 1998, Flashing Blue AC Light

The flashing AC light is indicating a fault in the AC system. It has its own self-diagnostic function which does not need a code reader.

The attached shows how to use it. Ignore the heading "1997 Volvo 960" as it also applies to the S/V90.

Re: Bad Starter? Battery issues car won't start after sittin

Go back to basics. To start you need fuel and spark. You say the fuel level is low, with a possible faulty gauge. After trying to start it have you removed a spark plug to see if it is wet with fuel? If it isn't you have a fuel delivery problem. Have you checked for a spark? It is easy to do especia...

Re: Radio Noise Suppression relay, can this make car not sta

The radio suppression relay can be interchanged with the cooling fan relay to see if it is faulty. They are exactly the same, which is unusual in modern cars. I have never heard that there are two radio suppression relays on your car and only one is listed. One thing that could lead to some people b...
