Installing inline fuel pump check valve, JRL

Post by MilehighV70XC »

I will be installing an inline fuel pump check valve. Just want to make sure I am doing it right.
JRL, I think I remember you saying in a post you guys now attach the check valve directly to the fuel filter? Still looking for the post.
When installing the CV, if I am understanding you correctly it should go,
Filter--Locking nut--Metal compression washer--CV--Plastic washer for nylon fuel line--Locking nut

Never mind, clicked on your name and noticed you just answered this same question today. I will leave this post up for the picture.

Where did you source the check valve? This comes up from time to time but I never have a good answer on where to buy the part.

I found it. I think I need to do one on mine. I have intermittent hard starting when mine is warm. Normally its 2 cranks and fired but if I am running errands and am in and out. It takes 4-5 before it fires. Not every time but often enough to want to check the fuel line psi

I Google the name of the C/V and whoever is selling it the cheapest on that particular day gets my business.
Prices for the same part range from $29 to over $44!... depending on how many they have in stock or whatever.
(I always find this huge price differential for the same part amazing)

Well today was a failure. On a '99 XC the filter is behind the axle above the subframe. Really could use your expertise on this JRL. I am doing this small write-up so maybe you can stop having to answer this question in the future.
Image
This is how you attach the C/V to the filter. The extra brass washer on the ground is just to show what is used on the filter. I already installed the other one in the picture.
Image

Image
The fuel line attaches to the filter with a 90degree elbow. There is not enough fuel line, from what I can tell, to cut and attach to the back of the C/V. There is enough line if I install it on the front of the filter.
Image
What is this valve with a cap in it attached to the green hard line. This looks the the only place the C/V could go if I want it behind the filter. The picture is looking up from under the control arm in the rear passenger side. On the left is where the line goes up to the filter. There is maybe 7" of line before the 90degree elbow.
Image

JRL or anyone who has done this on a '99 or 2000 AWD, is there much difference in installing the C/V in front of the filter? Will the fuel drain out of the filter if it is in front? Is that why you install it behind the filter?
Really appreciate any insight you have on this JRL

I installed mine where that schraeder valve is in the wheel well. Worked just fine.

Thank for the info.
How many miles ago did you install the CV.
How is the hose secured to the green hard line? I don't see any clamps. I also have never dealt with fuel hose with a nylon hose inside rubber. Does the nylon inner hose fit inside the green hard line and I just carefully cut away the rubber hose?
I know I am asking a lot of question but this is my only car. I cant afford to have the car down for more then a day.
I am going to be tackling this again in a couple days. I will let you know how it goes.

I would do it on the left of the schraeder valve actually, that side might not use the nylon-under-rubber type hose.

On my car, I completely got rid of the metal line and ran a new fuel hose from the valve. (Had the subframe down, you won't need to do this)

But honestly, I have no idea if the hose going to the fuel filter has the inner plastic sheath or not. :-( Sorry!
