2004 s60 air filter box ?
2004 s60 air filter box ?
New to the forum, figured I'd start cruising around because the wife's car is starting to get up there in age a bit. Was digging around under the hood to see if her air filter was in decent shape and found this. Some type of tubing running into the box that was unplugged on the right side. I also traced the end of the left one to find it also unplugged on the other end. The elbow on it is cracked, can't really tell where it was supposed to be connected. Question is: A)what are these? and B) where is the broken end supposed to go? thanks for any help!

That's the "air temp" sensor. It is vacuum controlled. When the ambient air is less than a certain temp, the vacuum turns a mixer of sorts below the box which then switches the air source to the exhaust heat shield so it takes up hotter air instead of the colder outside air. Someone correct me if I am wrong however as that is what I have always thought it was.

That is exactly what it is.
There is a vacuum nipple on the front of the intake manifold for the other end of the hose.
Crank engine and let it idle and follow the hissing noise.

Not that I know of. You may have had some minute performance issues between cold/hot but no way to get permanent damage2004s60TX wrote:got it. any chance this would cause any problems over a long period of time? no telling how long it's been like this
Example of Precision: Measure with a Micrometer, mark it with Chalk, and then cut it with an Axe.
