How long do 2.4 turbos last?

Post by Amys 940 »

Just wondering how long the motors can hold up. What's an average mileage. Also, how long do the turbos themselves hold up? The one I just bought is 164k. The motor sounds good now, is there anything I should (or shouldn't) do to keep them running?

300+ if it's well taken care of. They'll run pretty much run as long as a Honda or Toyota. I've seen many in junkyards of all 3 with well over that.

I had a Saab before this car and it made it to over 300K (odometer died 5 years before). The S70 is still running like a champ at almost 220,000 miles, just as well as when I bought it at 125. Compression numbers still indicate a very healthy engine, and the original turbo still pulls strong.

The turbo can last a real long time as well as long as you let it warm up and cool down properly. You should try not to boost when the motor is cold and let it cool down by not boosting the last couple of minutes of driving. I think synthetic oil would help as well.

As said above and change your oil frequently. Even synthetic, go max to 7500 between changes if you drive a lot of highway. 5000 is mostly in town without getting a good run once in a while. It is a well engineered motor and will run longer than you'll want to keep the car. Don't forget the warm-up cool-down for the turbo, critical to a long happy life.

Thank you for all the advice! I really want to keep this car for a while and don't want to ruin it. I have standard oil in it right now but I guess I'll switch to synthetic next time. I am in the habit of changing my oil every 3000 miles. That's standard oil course and I'm pretty religious about it. My 940 has 212,000 miles on it. It's a 2.3 N/A motor. The XC is pretty slow off the line even when it's warmed up. Is this normal?

I put over 400,000 miles on the 740GLE I had and it still ran like a champ. The XC should not be slow off the line, do you have it in S or E mode? If you switch to synthetic you can go 5,000 between oil changes.

I have it in E, which I guess is economy. Is S for sport? I haven't even tried the different modes yet.

Beware that switching to synthetic oil might cause your oil seals to start leaking. I'd just stick w/ dinosaur juice and change it every 3,000 miles or so.

The XC is slow compared to...the 940? Or just doesn't feel really fast?

If it still feels quicker than the 940 (which isn't saying much haha), keep in mind it's a 2389742398742978 pound wagon with AWD and 190 hp. Coming from a T5, the XC's pretty slow to me. But it may just need a tune up.

Haha! They are pretty heavy. Or at least they seem that way. NOTHING is slower than my 940. If I were going any slower in that thing, I'd be going back in time :-). The XC just seems slow compared to what I had imagined. Has that doggie feeling kind of like the 940. I'll just try hitting the turbo boost S button today and see what happens
