I have no idea how to reassemble the ashtray for my 850. I actually have two ashtrays, completely disassembled, which came with the car because the previous owner had some issue with one and tried to fix it. The Haynes and Volvo manuals don't really give a detailed explanation or diagram of this vital system. And since I've never previously had a functional ashtray in the car, I don't know how it is supposed to work. Apparently the coiled spring thingy makes it pop out, but I'm not a very good clockmaker.

That video doesn't tell me how to put all the individual pieces of the ashtray unit together. It just shows how to remove the unit from the dash as one piece.
I find it hard to believe that it cannot be reassembled, as Matty Moo asserts. Looking at the parts I have, nothing appears to be broken.

I have not tried to rebuild one. I guess I can pull mine and see how it goes together, from the cell stages. LOL

It can be re-assembled, I've done it a couple of times but it is tricky. The coiled spring nests in a slot on the very back of the ashtray and, as I recall, I needed to dial in some pre-load on the spring. I also think I had to jump the end stops on the front side of the mounting case.
The real problem is the dampers that snap in on the sides and ride along the toothed part of the movable tray. The mounting tabs that secure the dampers are almost always broken off. For those I used the two part epoxy that you knead to activate and gobbed it on the dampers to hold them to the side of the case.
I wish I could be more specific but I just messed with it until I figured out how it was supposed to work.

That's okay. I'm not one of those people who expects to be spoon-fed everything. I just prefer to check the interwebs first before I experiment in unknown territory. The odds are good that someone out there knows the correct angle to hold the ashtray in alignment with the Jovian moons while chanting the correct druidic verses to make the whole thing slide together like butter. With my luck, I'll crack every plastic bit just by looking at it wrong.
